Frequently asked questions

What is Kanekelon?

Kanekelon is a versatile synthetic fibre used extensively in the manufacture of wigs and hairpieces. It’s popularity is due to its ability to retain its shape after washing, and also due to the fine texture of the fibre, making it a desirable choice for simulating the texture of human hair.

What is ThermoStyle fibre?

ThermoStyle fibre, unique to Mia Browne, is a heat-resistant, premium quality synthetic fibre that may be styled with heated utensils (such as curling tongs) in the same way as human hair. Until recently, hair extensions made from synthetic fibres were not resistant to heat and could therefore not be styled. ThermoStyle fibre will allow styling with appliances up to 180 degrees centigrade.

Where does the human hair come from?

With the recent rise in popularity of hair extensions and pony tails among western women, there has been much interest as to the source of the human hair used in these products. Mia Browne is wholly committed to ensuring that all of our products use materials sourced from ethical origins.

Our human hair wigs, extensions and pony tails use hair gathered from Indian temples. In the Hindu culture, the highest offering of thanks, praise or intercession to God is the shaving of one's head. Hindu worshippers voluntarily have their hair removed and it is important to them that no payment or reward is received, as this is an act of worship. The temples, at which the hair is removed, collect and sell the hair to companies who process it and create human hair products. The funds received by these temples are used to support the impoverished and under-privileged within the local community.

A recent BBC documentary (Sept 2008) showed the singer, Jamelia, tracing back the origins of her own hair extensions. Through in-depth research and DNA testing, she found herself in India speaking with a young lady who was very likely to have been the donor. This young lady told Jamelia that her son had been very ill but had made a complete recovery to full health, which prompted the young mother to give thanks to God by having her head shaved at her local temple. She was thrilled that her hair (a by-product of her religious worship) had not only been used to adorn western women but, more importantly, had greatly benefited the poor in her local community.

Indian hair has a wonderful reputation among hair processing companies because, like European hair, it is fine and glossy but unlike its western counterpart it is much stronger and less easily damaged.

Are the wigs Monofilament?

The wigs we sell at Mia Browne are NOT monofilament wigs. Monofilament wigs have each of the individual hairs hand-tied to a fine transparent mesh allowing the wearers scalp to show through. However, the manufacturing process of monofilament wigs is labour-intensive and thus results in very expensive selling prices. Mia Browne wigs are fashionable and high quality but priced much more affordably than monofilament wigs.

Do Mia Browne wigs come in different sizes?

All Mia Browne wigs have an adjustable band within the cap to allow one size to fit all wearers. This discreet band is easily set to the appropriate tension on first wearing does not need re-adjusting each time the wigs is worn.

Are the fringes on Mia Browne wigs all the same length?

Wigs that have either full or side swept fringes come in one length that may then be trimmed and styled as required. The fringes on Mia Browne wigs are designed at a maximum length allowing shortening to the desired length by the wearer. If you're used to trimming fringes, this is a simple, at-home task. Alternatively, pop down to your local salon and ask them to trim it for you. All hairdressers are used to tailoring wigs and it is usually very inexpensive.

Can I style my wig/extensions/hair piece with heat from a hair dryer or curling tongs?

Mia Browne products made from Kanekelon (synthetic fibre) naturally maintain their shape. If the shape begins to fall out after repeated wear, simply wash gently and allow to dry naturally. The kanekelon product will then sprint back into the pre-style shape.

Human hair products (e.g. hair extensions and human hair wigs) can be style using heated tools but please do so gently. As with your own human hair, excessive and repeated heat treatment will cause damage.

Can I wash my wig/extensions/hair piece?

Both human hair products and kankelon synthetic fibres can be washed. Use a gently shampoo in lukewarm water. Do not rub or twist the hair. Follow with conditioner. Gently squeeze out excess water and pat dry with a towel. Do not roll or rub the hair on the towel. Human hair can be dried and styled as required. Kanekelon products should be allowed to dry naturally.
